A jacket is the layer that changes everything. It is the piece that moves between occasions, that travels, that sits over a dress one day and jeans the next. When a jacket is made well, from cloth that has been woven by hand using natural fibres, it becomes one of those rare pieces of clothing that does not feel like it needs replacing.
Nimmit’s handwoven and handloom jackets for women are made by artisans working in India’s textile craft traditions. Each jacket is a layering piece built to last, to age well, and to carry the kind of quiet distinction that handmade cloth always carries.
The jackets in this collection are woven from natural cotton on traditional handlooms. The structure of the cloth gives each jacket its character: a surface that catches light differently from different angles, a drape that is relaxed without being shapeless, a weight that works for transitional weather without being too heavy for Indian conditions.
Handloom cotton jacket fabric is distinct from mill-made cotton in one practical way that matters particularly for jackets: it has body. The natural tension in handwoven cloth gives it a slight structure that holds its form over a garment rather than collapsing into softness the way finer mill cloth can. A handwoven jacket sits well. It looks like it knows where it is.
Several jackets in this collection use Ikat-woven fabric. Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which threads are tied and dyed before weaving, so that when the cloth is woven, the pattern emerges from the threads themselves with characteristic soft-edged, slightly blurred borders. The pattern is not a print on the surface. It is in the structure of the cloth.
This gives Ikat fabric a depth that printed cloth does not have. The colour variation across a motif, the slight bleed at pattern edges, the way the design shifts when you move: all of this is the natural result of a process in which the weaver must plan the entire pattern before the first thread is placed on the loom. It is considered making.
Mass-produced jackets are often made to a seasonal brief. The fabric, the cut, and the construction are optimised for a price point and a moment. They perform adequately and then they become dated, or they wear out, or both.
A handwoven jacket is not made to a moment. The cloth it is made from has no expiry date written into its construction. Ikat fabric, handloom weaves: these are textile traditions with centuries behind them. The jacket made from them does not date. It deepens.

Our jackets use handloom-woven natural cotton and Ikat-woven fabric. All are made from natural fibres by Indian artisans. No synthetic blends, no chemical finishes. The fabric is what gives these jackets their character, and the character is worth understanding before you buy.
: Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique in which threads are tie-dyed before weaving. When the cloth is woven, the pattern appears with the characteristic soft-edged quality of threads that were dyed in bundles rather than as individual yarns. In a jacket, this produces a fabric with a depth and visual richness that printed cloth cannot match.
Yes. These are not special-occasion pieces. Natural cotton is durable, breathable, and improves with wearing. A well-made handwoven jacket becomes a daily companion: the piece you reach for without thinking because it works with everything and gets better with use.
